I have a good, intelligent, enterprising friend who is an entrepreneur and is P.G in Technology i.e. M.Tech. He mentored his son studying in 6th standard for business. His wife a P.G in Dietetics used to be busy in the morning to shout at the son for getting up early in the morning and be ready for school. Mr. Jassar who is resident of Canada and running business in India was all surprised by the time his wife wasted in the morning to wake up their then only son.

Morning scene:
Son in the bed, hiding his face with the pillow and half-in-sleep:
Mom to son,
” Get up my son, it is morning, you need to go to school. In case you will be late it will reflect a poor grade on your report card in “responsibility” column.”
Son murmurs back,
” A few moments more mom. Please allow me to sleep.”

Mom (busy in the kitchen) will sometimes shout from the kitchen,
“Get up or I will pull you out of the bed holding you from your ears.”

We are Punjabis and in Punjabi words the phrase is:
“Kan phar ke bahar sutna hai. Phir changa rahenga.”

It was a daily routine and Mr. Jassar’s tolerance level went on depleting to the level of annoyance and one day he sat with his wife, discussed and consulted with her the issue of the behaviour of their son over the cup of tea. At that time, they had a son only. But now they have two kids son and a lovely daughter. The complete home they have. A home without a daughter is like a hostel.

Mr. Jassar proposed to his wife:
” My dear why can’t we work out a solution that makes our son more responsible. If the son does not get up let him sleep as long as he wishes. How long will you trouble yourself to keep him waking up? At least, one day he will have to get himself up without your assistance.”
“But he will be late for school,” humbly his wife a nice responsible caring mom replied.
“Let him own his own responsibility right from today,” Mr. Jassar politely answered.

“This is not possible and is a mere dream. I bet.” Wife contested.
“Let me handle the child. Don’t wake him up right from tomorrow.” Mr. Jassar advised and instructed. Mr. Jassar though said politely but firmly.

Next day, wife did not wake up the child.

Child got late for the school. When he got up, he asked his mother un hn hn,
“Why you did not wake me up. I am late for the school.” The child complained to his mother.
The complaint had no effect either on mom or dad.

Before the mother could reply, father replied:
“We have decided, right from today, we shall not wake you up. You have to own your own responsibility of going to school. You have to learn and be wise.”

Child was surprised at this stark and stout unexpected answer. He was never expecting that the day will come when he will have to leave the ‘comfort zone’ and ‘helping hand” will be withdrawn.
He felt as if he has woken up from a deep sleep and dreaming state.
He surrendered and politely enquired from his father,
“What should I do dad? I don’t want to lose my classes.”

“Use a wake up ringing clock.” Dad said.
“Where can I get this clock?” the child asked in a low tone. The tone reflected the child needs guidance and solution for the problem.

“From the market.”

Dad & son went to the market and bought one ringing clock.
Dad also made a list of the activities needed to be done by his son once he was awake and up . Dad pinned up the list on son’s notice board in the room. The looked at the list and frowned. But he could not contest with his dad.

Next morning:

Clock gave 1st, 2nd and 3rd ring. On the 3rd ring the boy bounced out of the bed and started brushing his teeth, went to toilet and by the time his mother was ready with breakfast, the child was on the breakfast table.

Mother was feeling relieved today. She offered the breakfast with love, affection and relaxed mind. Child enjoyed the breakfast. Child felt the breakefast was more tasty than other days.

Wished the parents “Sat Shri Akal” and sought their blessings and went to attend the school. Son used to get ride to school and Dad had to pay $ 4 every day to one of his neighbours for this service.
Days went by. The child one day asked Mr. Jassar,

” Dad I need a bi-cycle. How much does it cost?”
“About Cn.$200.”
“I wish to buy one.”
“OK. Go ahead” , Dad replied appreciatingly.
“But I don’t have any money on me.”

Mother went on listening, silently but attentively.
Dad said,” look, my dear son we have started all afresh by immigrating to Canada. So we as a family don’t have enough funds for all this.”

“How can I have money then?”
“Earn it.”
“How can I earn it?”
“Let me think for a day I will be back on this”, dad said.

Next weekend
“I have an idea.” Dad started the talk with his son.
“Tell me.”
” In my office, lot of papers need to be arranged. You may come to my office on weekly off-days and holidays. I will pay you Cn.$100 per month.”
“One more idea, it costs to take a ride for going to school.”
“It can save you $ 80 if you go and come back on foot from school which is less than a km from our home.”

Idea struck to the mind of the child and child agreed to attend the office on off-days and holidays and even became ready to go to school on foot as he wanted the bi-cycle desperately.

The child started attending the office of the dad and arranging his papers and doing his odd jobs in the office.
Mother started to enjoy more life at home in the absence of child and his dad.
After 3 months, Mr. Jassar asked his son, “Why don’t you buy the bi-cycle?”
“Dad I have only 120 dollars. 100 earned plus 20 saved. I have 80 dollars short.”
Mr. Jassar offered, “Now I can lend you 80 dollars but I will charge interest.”

“What is interest Dad?”

“If you borrow money from others or banks, you use them. For that use you need to pay a small amount as percentage. That is called interest.”
“Right! I will pay,” agreed the child.
Mr. Jassar as promised loaned the child sum of 80 dollars.

The child bought the bi-cycle and was happy that he has bought the bi-cycle with his own money.

Another day, when the son was coming on foot from his school, the neighbour of Mr. Jassar who was bringing his child from the school, offered lift in car to the son of Mr. Jassar.

The child replied, “Thanks uncle. I will go home on foot I have a promise with my dad

The neighbour was surprised to hear these words from the 6th grade student.

Now after a period of about 4/5 weeks, the child finds that bi-cycle is well enjoyed and is needed no more.

He asked his father, “Dad, I wish to sell off my cycle. How can I do that?”
“Go to the internet and ask for bids on the internet.”

These days, the child, checks the bid everyday on the internet. Price offered for old cycle is 100 dollars, but the child is not mentally ready to sell. He wishes better price.

What the big business schools cannot teach the students in many years’ teaching that a dad taught within a month or two to a child of 12 /13 years – the financial management.

Are you trying to become a writer who in fact gets paid for his work? It may not be as far fetched as it sounds. Find out how you can get your start in writing by means of this genre.

The majority of people today who want to become a writer and fail fail for the exact same reason, they don’t know the best way to start. Writing a novel sounds great but it’s intimidating. Poetry just doesn’t sell outside of the greeting card market. Competition is overwhelming within the realm of children’s books. So where can an ambitious new author get a foot in the door?

Look towards the field of how-to books. You can find a lot of people out there who have to have information about how to do something no matter if it is hot rodding an engine, building a deck, or reupholstering a chair. The market is there, but so are the competitors. So, with all the competing publications on just about every conceivable topic, how do you get your book published and in the shops?

Think specialization. For instance, take into account the area of automobile engines. Most repair manuals these days are published on DVDs and sent to repair shops and dealerships. But suppose you have tuned your Datsun 510 to where it has 35 additional horsepower. Write a book and call it something like “Add 35 Horsepower to Your Datsun 510.” Write a step-by-step instruction manual telling precisely what you did with illustrations.

Now, the marketplace for a book with this degree of specialization won’t be millions of individuals, but there won’t be much, if any, competition either. The trick is to decide on a very specialized niche and then appeal to other people with an interest in that niche. Do your homework, go to internet forums, and find a niche that interests you plus a group of like-minded individuals.

To be a successful entrepreneur you are going to have to learn to deal with failure. There is no way around it. Thomas Edison tried over ten thousand different experiments before he finally demonstrated the first incandescent light bulb on October 21, 1879. Bill Gates’ first company, Traf-O-Data, was a failure. Michael Jordan was once quoted as saying: “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot; And missed. I’ve failed over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

In my short stint as an entrepreneur I’ve failed more times than I can count. I have also had my share of success, but itís not even close to equal. The failures far outweigh the successes, and Iím sure I have a lot more failure ahead of me. Iím OK with that because I know that as soon as I stop failing, I have stopped trying to innovate. It’s the nature of the business of being an entrepreneur, and of success in general.

If it were easy, everyone would do it. It is naive to think that every good idea that you have will result in a successful business venture. I have yet to hear an entrepreneur say “every single idea I come up with seems to work.” More likely, you hear something like “I failed at my first five businesses before this one took off.”

Think about that for a second. Five businesses. Sometimes the number is three, sometimes it’s 20, but the important point is that most entrepreneurs don’t hit a home-run with their first company. It really does amaze me – how many people have the stones to fail five times and still start a sixth business? You have to be supremely confident and treat those previous five times as a learning experience for the sixth. And if number six fails, you have to do the same and move on to number seven.

In my opinion, the most important thing is how you deal with failure. Once you accept that it’s inevitable, you are able to learn from your mistakes and move on. It’s easy to let the failure consume you – not so much because you are pessimistic, but more so because it is hard to see something that you poured your heart and soul into be ignored or rejected. As soon as possible you need to come to the realization that your business is what they are ignoring or rejecting, NOT you. The sooner you do that, the sooner you can objectively analyze why you failed and learn the things necessary for improvement in the future.

Failure isn’t easy and is extremely frustrating, but it’s a necessary part of success. Don’t believe me? Ask Thomas Edison, Bill Gates or Michael Jordan! Ok, asking Thomas Edison might be a little tough, but you get the idea

Every year millions of people answer “Yes” to that question and every year that answer costs many of them money, time, confidence, and disappointment.

According to the SBA, two of the key factors in the business’s survival and ability to thrive: the owner’s education level and the owner’s reason for starting the firm in the first place.

How can you make sure that you are among the winners rather than the losers in this high stakes game? The answer is inside of you. You must ask yourself four key questions to determine whether your own small business will survive and thrive.

1. Are You Ready
Have you mentally prepared yourself for the switch from employee to boss? You are going to be the one making decisions now about everything from your online presence, to marketing your brand and product line. This total control is one of the driving forces behind many people who take the plunge into starting their own business. And, it is also one of the elements that can drive new entrepreneurs into a place of confusion. When you start out, there is an endless list of decisions that need to be made and new questions crop up every day.

2. Have you identified your niche yet?
One of the reasons many businesses fail is that they fail to focus on a target audience. If you are a major discount chain then you can sell everything from peanuts to wallpaper. But this type of business requires vast resources that just aren’t available to the small business. Small businesses do dominate the marketplace (creating more than 50 percent of the private gross domestic product last year) by finding a different approach — a niche.
Knowing your niche means you are better able to find, target, and maintain your customers as well as provide the best possible goods and services to that customer base. That focus is one of your best chances to not only survive but to thrive in a very competitive marketplace.

3. What Is Your Plan Of Action?
Another key question in the survival and ultimate success of your business is how much planning you do before you open your electronic or physical doors. You need to decide if your business will be based on the Internet, include more traditional models, or both. Have you written (or at least outlined) your business plan? Dreaming, thinking and planning can save you much trouble and help keep you focused.

4. Have you prioritized? The final question here is answered by being able to process your “priorities”. Let me clue you in right now as to what will DEFEAT you as any type of business person: distractions. You’ll have a gazillion offers coming at you from all sides. You’ll get confused. You’ll get a serious case of “information overload”. And you won’t know what to do next. It’s probably already happened to you, right? You simply must get a “priority” and then stick to it if you’re going to succeed with your business.
A “priority” is your focus – what is your vision for your business and your future. I always say that ‘If you can dream, you can write out your vision”.

So what are your answers?

At some point, no matter how experienced a businessperson you are, you will need help: support, advice, tools, or information — or all of the above. One of the beautiful, and most frightening, aspects of growth is that it can lead you to places you never imagined. No matter how much planning and experience you bring to your new position as CEO, the unexpected will arise. How will you cope with this? It is important to recognize that no business is an island. It is not failure to seek help. Failure is when your business shuts down because you didn’t get the help you needed.

The best way to get timely help is to work on your support system while you work on building your business. Finding a Business Coach to work with you and help you close the gap between information and action. Working with a Business Coach, such as myself, will help you make a plan (and receive support to stick with it) to implement what you know and are learning.

After you have answered these four key questions you are now ready to ask yourself that one big question again — are you ready to start your own business?

Press releases are an effective marketing tool for new business. The good news too is that you don’t have to just submit to local

offline media (newspapers) anymore, there are many online press release sites. In fact, if your business is targeted to a global

audience, online press release distribution sites are the way to go.

The drawback though, depending on how you look at it, is that you cannot use press releases as an outright promotion and advertising

tool for your business. Press releases need to be newsworthy with a focus on the needs of your target audience or in some cases a focus

on the uniqueness of your business or on you as a new entrepreneur.

A few reasons to write press releases are:

- a new and improved website for your existing business

- recent expansion

- new product or service

- a recent or upcoming sponsorship of a charity event

- speaking engagement at an industry conference

How can press release distribution help your business

Great SEO tool Press releases are great for Search Engine Optimization If your press release is optimized for your keywords,

it will be picked up by many web sites, which will greatly increase your visibility. You also are allowed by the press release

distribution sites to have a link back to your website. A backlink from a press release site is very strong as these sites rank high in

the search engine.

Increases credibility Press releases increase your exposure in your industry, which gives you high visibility and credibility. The

more your audience see you or your business name show up when they search for your industry information or keywords, the better.

Low-cost promotional tool There are many free press release sites on the Internet. In some cases, especially as a new business, this

is all you need. However, there are some sites that offer low-cost press release distribution with links back to your website, images

in the press release, supporting documents in the press release and more.

And last but not least, get in the habit of sending press releases frequently. Just make sure they are newsworthy. Quick way to test

whether you have a newsworthy item for a press release is to ask yourself, ‘How will this benefit my target market?’

Edmund H. Shea, Jr., an entrepreneur and pioneering venture capital investor who led one of the nation’s top tunneling businesses and co-founded Shea Homes, one of the largest homebuilders in the United States, passed away August 13, 2010 at his San Marino house. Shea was 80 years old.

The cause of Shea’s death was attributed to pulmonary fibrosis.

In the 1960s, Mr. Shea pioneered venture investing and offered early stage capital for Hambrecht & Quist, which became a well-known technology investment banking company located in San Francisco. Throughout the following 40 years, Mr. Shea made early investments in hundreds of new businesses, such as Activision, Adobe, Altera Corporation, Brocade, Compaq Computer, Genentech, Affymax, America West Airlines, AES Corporation, and Peet’s Coffee & Tea. Fabrinet, a start-up that Shea helped fund in 2000, successfully completed its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange in August 2010.

Taught to be an engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Shea did not fit the typecast of a typical venture capitalist. He invested only his personal and his family’s money and so could be a particularly elastic and tolerant investor. He often explored Silicon Valley solo, lugging a canvas bag packed with documents to meet entrepreneurs one-on-one and question them smoothly about their thoughts and business ideas.

“Although Ed personally directed a very large venture capital investment portfolio, he did it without the usual cadre of MBA underlings,” said William Brody, President of the Salk Institute in La Jolla California, president emeritus of Johns Hopkins University and formerly CEO of Resonex, a venture startup. “He did his own due diligence and formed his own judgments.”

Shea regularly told others that he “invested in people, before technology.” As Bill Hambrecht, co-founder of Hambrecht & Quist stated: “He never ignored the human element in any decision, and was always willing to take a chance on people with character.”

On line job has many advantages, you can work at home, or from any other place you like to, you get to be your own boss, you determine your own work hours, and time for holidays, basically it’s a dream many seek. But is it possible to earn a living working on line, or is that only reserved for those lucky few. I must admit, it is a dream and many fail to accomplish it.although it seem that the opportunities are endless, and that everybody can succeed, that doesn’t happen. In my opinion there are some crucial reasons for that.
First of all, many think this is some kind of scam, and they are ready to dedicate their time finding the right key to the puzzle of getting money fast. And in reality they are missing one important fact, this is a job like any other job, you have to work, this is not a matter of luck there are no easy solutions. You have to invest your time and effort. You also have to realize that not everything will work at first, there will be obstacles. But if you are truly committed and you do understand that this is serious work, you are on a good path of fulfilling your dreams.
The second thing i see a lot are unreasonable expectations. This is most seen in very young people. After they have red two, three articles they think they know all, and they are read to become instant millionaires. Although, i think it is a good think to stream high it’s really unlikely that you will earn millions in a blink of an eye. As i said before, you have to work hard, but you should also be realistic in your expectations, that way you won’t be easily disappointed. And this is a number one reason many quit working online, telling everybody this is some kind of scam. And in reality, they were just to inpatient and let’s face, a bit frivolous.you must learn to take things slowly, and to enjoy the path, you will learn a lot along a way, and all that, especially mistakes will take you closer to your dream. Patience is the key.
And, in the end, there is one more basic thing, i want to draw your attention to. You must stay focused. When you choose one way, that that is the path to follow. Don’t let yourself be distracted by what the others do. You don’t know what is their background and how hard they worked for something, so when you maybe see a final result that tops yours, don’t mimic it, you have your own aim and stick to it.your time will come in your own time, by your own rules.
